Today’s Feature Friday highlights an out of the box design concept that really changes a room’s atmosphere.
Traditionally when thinking about installing faux wood planks, the idea of installing them along the ceiling is the first thought that comes to mind. Often when the planks are used along the ceiling, faux wood beams are then installed over them to add additional depth.
In the below picture, the designer intented to create a western style game/bar room. The house has traditional moulding running throughout but a room with a different feel was desiredfor the entertaining area.
The T 28 faux wood ceiling plank was used as a door surround in this picture. In addition to the door surround it was used as the backsplash for the bar area and a decorative accent under the bar table top. The PM 12 plank was used as the window surrounds and baseboards and was installed with a 45 degree miter cut to create a perfect frame. To continue the flow of this western style room, the PM 09 was used to join all of the planks together. The PM 09 is the smaller plank that connects the PM 12 window surround and baseboard to the T 28 door surround.
To help the transition from the game room to the remaining of the house, the UT 9805 crown molding (moulding) was installed along the ceiling.
As a side note, if you are considering designing a similar i style room, faux wood corbels provide a great design aspect under a countertop & or bar area.

In today’s video we will be highlighting the proper techniques in cutting and inside crown moulding corner, with a miter saw. By following these easy steps you will save money by reducing the waste factor and save a great deal of time and frustration.
As you can see from our miter saw with have labeled the fence with photos that show the proper positioning for an inside and outside 45 degree corner. These images are available for download at www.superiorbuildingsupplies.com There is a link for these photos in the description. (See photos Above)
We are now ready to make or first cut. As the picture shows we will now turn our saw to the 45 degree mark on the left side.
When cutting decorative crown moulding, remember you always want to cut the moulding upside down. Make sure that the moulding fits firmly against the fence and table. The fence acts as the ceiling and the table acts as the wall. As the instructions on our fence show, we will save the left hand side of our cut and discard the right had side.
We are now ready to make our second cut we now swing the table around to the left hand 45 degree market.
We now look again at our instructions on our fence for the outside corner. We see after making the cut we save the left hand side of the cut and discard the right. As with our first cut it is very important that we fit the moulding firmly against the fence and the table. This will ensure the moulding is cut on the same angle as our first cut.
By following these simple techniques you now have an outside corner that is virtually seamless once installed.
Few Things to Remember When Cutting You’re Outside Corner
Use a saw blade with 96 teeth or more. This will create a sharp clean cut on your moulding.
Superior Faux Wood Beams are perfect for any application; their authentic look transpires a simple plain room into something with rich character and uniqueness.
The Superior Faux Wood Beams range from 11’6” to 18’9”. From time to time customers will run into a minor issue of needing to extend the faux beams to a longer length.
There are several ways to go about extending Superior Faux Beams.
The fastest method is by butting the beams together and covering the seam with a faux iron strap. (You can view faux iron straps by clicking here) The faux iron strap will be the topic of our next blog.
The second method though a little more time consuming, will allow you to create a seamless transition from one beam to another. The following video walks you through the simple and easy steps in creating a seamless transition between two beams without the aid of a decorative faux iron strap.
